Celebrating a Membership Milestone
PCNZ has recently reached a major milestone of surpassing 800 club members. Our membership is steadily growing over recent years with the growth spread evenly across all the regions. Well done to us all!
SWOTY
On the weekend of 4 September, over 100 club members from across the country (well everywhere but Auckland due the Covid travel restrictions) ascended into Kaikoura. As Aucklanders, sadly Jenni and I had to withdraw from participating, but I am told the weekend was awesome and the town of Kaikoura wonderful hosts with “Welcome PCNZ” signs in shop windows. Special mention to Andy Anderson for being presented his Life Membership pin, and to Channon Ross and Paul Alexander for being presented the Trevor Hudson Memorial Trophy for their significant contribution to the Club – most well-deserved guys.
Strategic Planning
The National Committee met in October to review our strategic plan and update our Operational Plan for the coming year. When comparing against 2019, it is interesting to see how the impact of Covid-19 has changed our thinking. A high-level review of 2019 and summary update of the 2020 strategic intents are:
- Sustainable PCNZ Race Series: The initiation of track days (RSG) as support groups for the PCNZ Race Series has proven popular earlier this year, and for the 2020-21 race season we are planning track day support groups for 4 of the 6 rounds. The Boxster Class looks to have up to 5 cars this season, with regular testing of different Boxster cars and configurations to achieve a competitive class.
- Finding a more suitable home for the Club: (clubrooms, access to hoist etc.) While this is still desirable, following the Covid-19 ways of working changes, we are now questioning the need for a Club office? Not having a club room would be a significant annual saving to our running costs and is under serious consideration.
- PCNZ Book: This project is a significant undertaking, and a greater undertaking than casual club member contributions from time to time. We recognise the book needs dedicated and paid resource to progress in a meaningful timeframe, and are looking to set a milestone of having the book in a final draft within the next two years. Further updates to follow.
- Workload/Volunteers: (managing the workload of key club volunteers and finding new volunteers to help run the Club). We are not progressing as well as hoped and we need to identify new, enthusiastic and energetic club members to assist us.
- Porsche Parade 2023: It will have been 11 years since the last PCNZ Parade in 2012, a Porsche Parade is now overdue, and the committee is undertaking early investigations for location options.
Driver Training Days
The southern team held a successful Driver Training Day at the Levels Race Circuit in Timaru, and in-between Auckland lockdowns, we managed to squeeze in a northern Driver Training Day held at BMMP in Taupo. Both events were well attended. A special mention to Steff’s single-minded determination to make the Taupo day happen. And we need to recognise all the helpers and instructors who supported these events.
Upcoming Events
Members should be receiving invites for November social lunch runs, the Northern Milford Christmas Picnic on 06 December, and the Southern Christmas Picnic on 13 December. I note this year’s model theme for Milford is the 356 and I look forward to seeing Club members during the festive season.
Stay safe everyone!
Editor's Report
What a difference a drive makes!
During September I decided to leave Auckland and drive my Boxster south and then west. South to drive the new coastal road into Kaikoura then west to where the wild nature of the West Coast rules as in Westport and the Buller District.
A refreshing community spirit exists in these towns. Kaikoura is still rebuilding its roads and buildings after the 2016 earthquake and has already made the region very attractive. As I enjoyed the Esplanade and the display of 50+ Porsches I chatted with the owners of the Mayfair Art Deco theatre complex that is being developed as a multimedia art centre. They are one example of great local community effort that will enrich the lives of locals and visitors alike. Another was Jo York and her energetic efforts to link Kaikoura with the Porsche Club meant the visitors gained insights into the community. The Club did contribute more than $2000 to a very worthy local charity doing work to improve the lives of women and children. Jo organised to block the Esplanade for our public display as well as the signage in shops that welcomed and encouraged us to linger and spend locally. I believe many of us did just that.
The friendly community attitudes were evident in Westport where I dined with family at excellent restaurants, ate freshly baked German bread and visited the many memorable rugged outdoor attractions. (See pages 12 & 13).
We need the people in these communities and their businesses to thrive so while I am an enthusiastic driver, I do enjoy meeting interesting individuals, listening and consuming their local brew along with the bread. This is such an easy way of connecting with and supporting New Zealand communities.
PCNZ continues to grow and I want to understand how the Club can add to your Porsche passion. The National and Social committees of your Club are wanting your new ideas and energy. There is a need to expand our thinking to cater for diverse interests of those who enjoy people and Porsches. My details are on the page 62 of Spiel so please make contact and we can chat.
You never know what a difference a drive makes until you do it!
There are more than 700 members so there will be many more tales to be told. Accept my challenge and please flood my inbox. spiel@porsche.org.nz
